Driving a taxi in Brussels: which rules apply and does TaxiBuddy work there?

Which law applies to taxis in Brussels?
Brussels regulates taxi services through the ordinance of 9 June 2022 on taxi services. The implementing decrees of 6 October 2022 have been in force since 21 October 2022. Rank taxis and street taxis have shared one basic status since then. Your contact with Brussels Mobility runs digitally, through the Region's platform.
Do I have to connect to Chiron in Brussels?
No. Chiron is the Flemish government's ride database and only applies to operators with a Flemish licence. Brussels instead requires a digital taximeter or an equivalent measuring instrument that securely records, stores and transmits the ride data listed in article 43 of the ordinance.
Which equipment is required in a Brussels taxi?
The implementing decrees set out what the vehicle must contain:
- A digital taximeter or an equivalent measuring instrument for the data in article 43.
- A device for payment by debit card, credit card and other electronic means of payment.
- A receipt in duplicate.
- Connection of a card reader and a navigation system.
Platforms that pass on rides, the booking intermediaries, need an approval from the Region.
Is my Flemish licence valid in Brussels?
No. A Flemish licence for paid passenger transport (IBP) is valid throughout Flanders, but not in Brussels or Wallonia. If you want to work from Brussels, you need a Brussels licence. Ask Brussels Mobility about the conditions.
When can I use TaxiBuddy in Brussels?
There is no date yet. Two things have to be ready first: a start without Chiron credentials and an answer to the Brussels taximeter requirement. Do you drive in Brussels and want to know as soon as we are ready? Send us a message and we will let you know.
